The Bell

I am a week or so overdue in reviewing The Bell by Iris Murdoch.

Product Information:
320 pages
Pengion Classics, 2nd Edition (Nov. 2001)
Personal Copy

Amazon.com Synopsis: A lay community of thoroughly mixed-up people is encamped outside Imber Abbey, home of an order of sequestered nuns. A new bell is being installed when suddenly the old bell, a legendary symbol of religion and magic, is rediscovered. And then things begin to change. Meanwhile the wise old Abbess watches and prays and exercises discreet authority. And everyone, or almost everyone, hopes to be saved, whatever that may mean. Originally published in 1958, this funny, sad, and moving novel is about religion, sex, and the fight between good and evil.

My thoughts: I think that I may have found a new author to love. I mentioned a few weeks ago that I purchased the Book Lust Journal, whose author Nancy Pearl recommended Murdoch. I was not disappointed. The writing was superb and I became engrossed by the characters Michael and Dora. Michael, whose character you may dislike on moral grounds, still sparked compassion from me. And Dora, poor Dora, I longed for her to be strong and make the right decisions.

Two quotes which stood out to me:

The talk of lovers who have just declared their love is one of life's most
sweet delights. Each vies with the other in humility, in amazement at being so
valued.

This quote brought me back to the early days of dating my husband. Nothing feels better than knowing that you are loved. Although that love still continues on, sometimes I long for a few hours of that 'young love' once again.

One must perform the lower act which one can manage and sustain; not the higher act which one bungles.

I struggle with this concept - how are we to learn and do new things, if we don't try that higher act, which we might just bungle? But I have to admit, it is often easier to maintain the status quo.

I was pleased with how Murdoch summed up the story for all of the characters and I am now searching for my next choice of Murdoch's 25 remaining novels.

Catching Up

Rbelle over an An Empty Page reminded me today that a lot happens when you take an extended leave from blogging. Thought that I would take a quick minute to post a few pictures from an amazing work opportunity I had in April...Hong Kong!

Tian Tan Budda in Ngong Ping, Lantau Island, Hong Kong. This site had to be one of the most peaceful and breathtaking places I have ever been in my life. Regardless of your faith, or your name for God, you can't help but feel connected here.

Crafty Tuesday - So Close

I took some time tonight to exercise some frustrations on my sewing machine. I came oh so close to finishing this cute little bag. If only I had remembered to buy FOUR D-rings instead of TWO. Brilliant. Easy fix, once I can make it to JoAnn, but a little anticlimactic nonetheless.

Crafty Tuesday - Finally

I've been a little lax in finishing up this project, but I finally completed the cover for my KitchenAid on Sunday. I would have been done sooner, but I accidentally (stupidly) cut a huge gash in the side of the fabric. So, it's a little less wide than I had originally planned, but it turned out ok. Yay!!

Crafty Tuesday - Here I Am!

Not a ton of crafty progress made over the last week. I did spend an evening working on the mixer cover that I've been covering (unfortunately) for the past three weeks. Here's a few shots of the progress...

Three pieces longing for some attention:

Up close and personal look at my first time freehand quilting - it was a lot more daunting than this anal-retentive-color-within-the-lines girl would like, but after a few minutes I was having fun!!

And here's a sneak preview of what took up so much of my time over the weekend. The color inspiration and the new wall color for the sewing room.

Crafty Tuesday Part Deux

Last week I showed pictures of two sewing patterns that I ordered. They arrived on Saturday, but there was entirely too much moving of furniture and de-cluttering rooms to do anything but place them in the sewing room.

In anticipation of today's post, I had to get my butt in gear... I'm starting with a cover for my KitchenAid - the pattern is actually for a breadmaker cover, but if I did the measurements correctly, it should still work. Last night, I was able to start cutting fabric - Yay for Progress! I was thrilled to have so much floorspace to be able to lay out the fabric. Having ventured into the realm of quilting over the past few years, I had forgotten what it was like to actually use a pattern and scissors - it's completely different when you rely solely on a ruler and a rotary cutter!

Here's some shots of last night's progress. I'm hoping for more time this evening to cut the lining and maybe start sewing a little.

Tuesday Crafting...

I posted yesterday about the quilt that I just finished. Looks like I should have waited one more day!!

Take a look at my new pretty button on the left for Crafty Tuesdays - hosted by Pink Ric Rac. I'm really looking forward to it.

So here are my Crafty Tuesday thoughts for this week... I'm feeling a home decorating mood coming on, so I ordered a few patterns yesterday, here's what I found at Simplicity :

I'm looking forward to heading to the fabric store to find some inspiration for the patterns. JoAnn mothership, here I come!

It only took me five years

Finally - knocked one project off the list on Sunday. I started this quilt for my niece before she was born... she turned four in May. Talk about procrastination!

Here it is:

We also have a few other house projects in the works - one of which may turn into a sewing room for me. More on that later.
